Could It Be Dyslexia?

Testimonials

Hello - and welcome to Could It Be Dyslexia (CIBD) Foundation!

We are asking for your help in supporting dyslexic students who have financial hardships. Your regularly occurring or one-time gift combined with others, will enable these students to receive one-on-one tutoring that will literally change their lives!

The CIBD Foundation is a 501c(3) Corporation, meaning your gift is fully tax-deductible. Further, the Foundation is run by volunteers who give freely of their time and talents, meaning that 100% of your donation goes directly toward helping these students. You may donate toward our cause by clicking the "Donate Here" button at the top of this page. Thank you for your consideration! But please, read on to understand why this is so important!

The CIBD Foundation was started when the tutors working for Could It Be Dyslexia, founded in 2009, just couldn not handle the heartbreak of not being able to work with students due to financial hardships. Our mission is to meet each student where they are and help them to unlock their potential while recovering their self-esteem. Our goal is to teach students to become proficient readers and spellers. Our teaching methodologies use the science of reading and incorporate structured literacy and Orton Gillingham methods showcasing the logic of our language.

Dyslexia is not new, but because of technology and scientific breakthroughs, our understanding of it is! DYS = "difficulty with" LEXIA = "language" (spelling, reading, writing, thoughts, speech) DYSLEXIA is an unexpected difficulty with language despite intelligence, motivation, and education.

Dyslexics are typically very intelligent and capable, but because they are unable to learn to read and spell in the traditional manner they are often labeled as lazy, dumb, or stupid.... and unfortunately, these incredible students begin to believe it. But, this is just not true...these students are simply misunderstood. Their literacy trouble has nothing to do with their intelligence, it is neurobiological in origin and often is completely unexpected. Teachers and parents often think the student will outgrow their disabilities and "catch up" with their peers, but because they are not taught in the manner that they need, they just fall further and further behind.

Dyslexia remediation is expensive. It averages out to approximately $600 a month, which can be prohibitive for many families.

It is a long and grueling road, like a marathon, and takes a lot of work and perseverance. Our students are with us for years; typically 4 - 7 years. Many begin several grade levels behind in school; but as we work, the gap between their performance and the performance of their peers closes. The students begin to believe in themselves and understand that their brain is wired differently, and that it is not a bad thing!

In fact, having a brain that is wired differently is something to be celebrated! Dyslexics have wonderful strengths! They are creative and out of the box thinkers, they can see patterns and evaluate possibilities, they are empathetic, sensitive, intuitive, and kind, they are solution based problem solvers, they are logical, inventive, and so much more! We want our students to see themselves as more than a test score or grade. Honestly, many dyslexics excel in their chosen career because of these strengths.
